New and unique reading/signing idea

My sixth novel, COMA, was just released, and while I plan to go the
traditional route to promote the book (bookstore signings), I gave the
process some thought. Who, besides the average reader, has the time to
read at their leisure? Those who have very little else to do: Senior
Citizens in Retirement Homes.

I mailed a flyer to a number of Senior Citizen Activity Directors,
offering to conduct a reading/signing for their residents..plus give
them a 25% discount for an autographed copy. So far, three prospects
have scheduled an event, and they were extremely appreciative. I'll do
my thing during cocktail hour.

In my second book, I mentioned a particular wine. The winery held a
reading/signing at their winery. Everyone drank the wine, including
the presenter. And I sold 43 copies that night. I recommend that at
every book signing alcohol should be served.

Excellent tips Bill. If your book talks about any topic, even in the slightest way, then it behooves you to try and exploit it in terms of marketing. A book that takes place in say Texas could appeal to a wide range of audiences - not just fiction readers. One that covers travel can be sold not only in the travel section of bookstores, but also at travel stores, REIs, organizations that focus on travel, etc. Thinking outside the box is a must these days in terms of book promotion.

This is a great idea, one that many of us can probably adapt to fit the primary audiences for our books, both fiction and nonfiction.

Dan Poynter keeps pointing out in his materials that most books are not sold in bookstores. While we all say, "Yes, that's probably right," we're not being as creative as we might be when we don't consider the kinds of ideas you're experimenting with here.
