Profile Information

My hometown:
Born and raised in California, to Ulysses and Leonora Prince. Mom is a retired teacher and professional illustrator whose works include Lily of Watts, Maple Street, and Nellie Cameron; published in the late 60's and early 70's. Dad was a civil war historian, editor, and news reporter. He passed away in 1999.

"Dabbled" with the military for 12 plus years, now a service disabled (partially) vet...someone remarked, after seeing the photo of me behind the dark glasses, "are you blind?" Well....physically not yet; in other things....I guess it depends on who is asked!
My books:
Abstractions in Poem: Perspectives of Life, Love, and War, 176pp, 8/2007

SHAWNEE MISSION, Kansas – He's been a military K-9 cop, high threat operations team marksman, avionics technician, instructor, software engineer and entrepreneur. Now he can add "published poet" to the list. Kansas City-area author Rushton D. Prince uses words as a brush to paint Abstractions in Poem: Perspectives of Life, Love, and War, bringing this work visually to life. According to Prince, Abstractions in Poem (175 pp., $19.95), is “a place where the mind can go…unbound.” Like any artist, Prince wants his work to move the reader and has done just that. Take an excerpt from “Caretaker,” one of the book’s poems where Prince’s take on love unobtainable is put to verse:

…just this affliction to protect
until you find another
and then I will know peace
and then I will be lowered
into the unknown
but never to be forgotten
for I was never known.

Rushton elicited the help of his mother, acclaimed illustrator Leonora E. Prince (Lily of Watts, 1969; Nellie Cameron, 1971; and Maple Street, 1970) for the book’s cover art inspired by the book's poem "Metalworked Man." Rushton began writing in 1976. He is currently working on a techno-thriller set in the future and his second book of poetry as his next projects.

• "...beautiful & terrible all at once. moving and real."

Ode to Poe

ITCH OF PITCH

Of Poe's beloved 'Lenore'
Of that haunting quote 'Nevermore'
Of the Raven to abhor
Is emptiness evermore
Pitch-black coaxing me to 'explore.'

Pitch-black coaxing as none before.

Into this thick dark and deep
Descending hand over hand in darkness steep
Into this abundance
Loneliness replete
I arrived with promises, promises to seek.

There to grasp, to understand
There to search, to demand
Despite the absence of sanity defiantly grand
I walked as victim by one's own hand
To in ci… Continue
