Abstractions in Poem: Perspectives of Life, Love, and War, 176pp, PublishAmerica, 8/2007SHAWNEE MISSION, Kansas – He's been a military K-9 cop, high threat operations team marksman, avionics technician, instructor, software engineer and entrepreneur. Now he can add "published poet" to the list. Kansas City-area author Rushton D. Prince uses words as a brush to paint Abstractions in Poem: Perspectives of Life, Love, and War, bringing this work visually to life. According to Prince, Abstractions in Poem (175 pp., $19.95), is “a place where the mind can go…unbound.” Like any artist, Prince wants his work to move the reader and has done just that. Take an excerpt from “Caretaker,” one of the book’s poems where Prince’s take on love unobtainable is put to verse:
…just this affliction to protect
until you find another
and then I will know peace
and then I will be lowered
into the unknown
but never to be forgotten
for I was never known.
Rushton elicited the help of his mother, acclaimed illustrator Leonora E. Prince (Lily of Watts, 1969; Nellie Cameron, 1971; and Maple Street, 1970) for the book’s cover art inspired by the book's poem "Metalworked Man." Rushton began writing in 1976. He is currently working on a techno-thriller set in the future and his second book of poetry as his next projects.
