Very helpful articles, Shelagh. I like the idea of a mix of inspiration and nitty-gritty advice. It will be fun watching this area evolve. Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,.

Thanks for the blog comment. i'm glad you find the cover efective. The nomination is certainly a nice bit of 'icing on the cake' following on from the successful launch and early performance of the novel, and of course it's a great tribute to the designer to be nominated, win or lose!

Regards

Brian

LOL Malcolm - saw your message on Shelagh's page. It's one of those life affirming moments when we recognize our own name, isn't it. Hope that you mention your great sense of humour somewhere on your profile! :o)

MALCOLM,
MURDER AT FONTANA DAM TOOK ME ABOUT ONE HUNDRED AND TEN YEARS TO WRITE. IT HAS BEEN OUT ABOUT A YEAR AND I GUESS I AM HAPPY WITH THE RESULTS. I AM INTO MY THIRD PRINTING. THE PLOT IS SIMPLE, AMERICA IS IN THE MIDDLE OF WORLD WAR, HAS 5000 PEOPLE BUILDING A DAM AND A COUPLE OF ADOLPH'S BOYS ARE TRYING TO BLOW IT UP. I FEEL I HAVE CREATED SOME STRONG CHARACTERS.

Thank you so much.Congratulations on your achievements. I understand what you mean by "the most precious and cursed gift of prophecy." That was a good way of putting it. Carole

Ghostly Solitude is the Writer's Only Truth

"Writers are what they genuinely are only when they are at work in the silent and instinctual cell of ghostly solitude, and never when they are out industriously chatting on the terrace." -- Cynthia Ozick in "Writers, Visible and Invisible"

When you converse with a writer in a bar, subway, jail cell, battlefield, brothel or terrace, you're dreaming, drunk, on drugs, having a mystical experience, or at best talking to a holograph. The actual writer, to the extent he exists at all, is far away dr… Continue

A POD-friendly book review site

Several days ago, Floyd Orr's "POD Book Reviews & More" celebrated its second anniversary. The primary intend ot the site--which initially focused only on iUniverse books--is to provide a viable forum for POD reviews.

My book THE SUN SINGER was reviewed there a couple of years ago and I have since joined the reviewer team. While the site especially welcomes POD and other self-published books, it has recently expanded to include reviews of traditionally published books.

Take a look at the s… Continue

'Garden of Heaven' Just About Ready to Go Looking for a Publisher

If I ever found a magic lamp with a friendly genie inside, I would ask him/her to take the hassle out of publisher stalking. Best case, when I finish a novel, some magic person comes along and zooms off with the MS, then returns saying, "Malcolm, HarperCollins is offering $1.5 million in an advance against royalties and wants to know if that's enough."

I began work on "Garden of Heaven" in 1993, tossed it in a box, took it out, shoved it in another box, finally learning enough to under

Shelly's Place

A friend of mine has just started a new blog that's going to focus on books and films. Both of us maintained blogs in another blogging community that went under. (I promise, it wasn't out fault!)

She's started out with posts that focus on a sense of place and on setting one's novel properly with a time period.
