It certainly is time to remind folks to buy, Widow's Walk from Amazon and while you're there, read my review of this remarkable book by Ken Weene. It is one of the best narrative stories I have read about ordinary yet extraordinary lives and it is...

Clark, I agree with you--many interviews I read lately ask the same stale questions and seem trite--my own included. Your method seems more natural and unaffected. Micki

My first local cable TV guest/interview spot

First I must mention that I have a fear of public speaking and being the center of attention. That being said, while other authors may have jumped for joy at the thought of speaking into TV cameras, for me it was about as much fun as root canal without novacain. Luckily--or not--depending upon one's point of view, I had been cajoled(forcefully pushed lol) by my local MADD organization to speak to one of the school PTAs, as a victim of a DWI related death. I survived that and thought that I was n… Continue

I was talking with a publicist the other day and was told that PW does charge, but you do not know it as a reader. NYT, well they are really fussy as you know, the LA Times has taken away the separate booklet and now just put in the regular paper.
Many of the papers that I have written to have replied the only books they cover are by local authors. Others say they do not have the space. Here in Kingman we are lucky that I am established. They have a paper which is disappearing before our very eyes. It drops off pages and width a lot.
There is an argument both ways, the costs are getting quite steep for publicity and others say well it diminishes the integrity of the review. What is the answer? Have no idea.

Looking forward to the book.

Hi Micki

Could you email me at freya [at] bookbuzzr [dot] com about the issue you have with the BookBuzzr widget. I would like to understand the issue better so we can fix it. BookBuzzr is pretty new and we are constantly trying to make it better.

Cheers
Freya

Interesting that you ask about the charging. What has been a topic of discussion lately is whether or not we should charge. We at present do not charge for reviews. Although several sites do have set ups to charge for the review we do not. Kirkus, Foreword (through one of its subsidiaries), and a couple of private sites do charge. They do it on the basis that their reviews are an analysis of the book, marketing partially, and posting at places where authors should be posting by themselves, such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and some others.
We have not arrived at a conclusion on this as yet. It would be nice to get something for the time spent, but right now, we are critical and would you believe we have a following of 2 million readers now!
This has been quite an experience. From the statistics I have read it seems as though there are about 200,000 books published each year. Of that, 1000 sell over 500 copies. The rest languish on the shelves. Self published books do not sell much over 100 to 200 copies. Also, only about 200 or so new books get reviews beyond those mentioned above.
One article I read indicates that self published authors should consider pay about 20 reviewers to get their material out there. The reviews can be posted in the spots mentioned and others. Use of the review can also be made for the back cover of the book. Cost is something that is really interesting as they say it can range from $20 to $400.
So far, my wife and I read a lot of books and each week we put out 1 to 2 as recommended.
So for now, wait and see if you like the review. Keep track after it is published and see if it has affected sales. I know that some of the authors we have reviewed, their sales have taken off and have done well. Soul Survivor has created a fervor world wide and were the first to review it. Other books would have done well on their own since they were by well known authors. One Author we believe we assisted in getting off the mark was J. R. LaGreca and her series of books. It all works together.

Regards

Clark

Great to get a copy of your book. I do not care about the water spots, heck, we live in the desert and it is so dry here most of the time, it would be a welcome relief.

Hi Micki:

Personally, I love to get a lot of books and read them all. However, there is a problem with time, there never is enough. I understand there are thousands of books published each year, even now in the great recession.

I am a fast read, about 3 books a week. Sometimes a little more, but I get so wrapped up in them, only wish I could read faster. Went to Evelyn Wood to speed up, they said I was too fast now and would not be able to turn the pages fast enough.

My wife and I both review and that is a limited endeavor of about 4 to 5 books a week. That is 250 if on the high side that we can read. A lot of books are truthfully, not worth reading beyond the 3rd chapter. Right now I am reading one by Tom Rob Smith which is a thriller, I cannot put it down, it keeps you guessing and moving forward. He is such a nice writer.

Keep at it. If you want to send to me yours for review I have only a couple of rules, it has to be published in the current year or one year back at most. A galley is just fine.

I know you are on the Staten Island as an address, I am an Easterner as well. Born in Rochester NY and we moved to Toms River NJ where I graduated High School.

MS Word does a lot of great corrections in the editing field, but Open Office is really good from Sun Micro Systems and it is free.
