It doesn't sound like a contradiction at all :) Religion is part of the real world and is equipped to deal with all eventualities - to confine it to nice cozy situations is to short-change it, I think.
*g* I'm a Christian writer of gay romance, so I'm familiar with the idea of contradictions. I laugh it to scorn :)
