Author Joyce Anthony is a superb writer with images and ideals in her writing that the world needs to read. She has definitely demonstrated her prowess in her excellent and very captivating book, Storm. This story is more than just a story about a man and his dog. The main character, Storm is a mysterious man with a heart wide open to discovery. As Storm and his amazing dog, Maggie head out to find his own personal reason for being, he paints the reader into his quest for truth and understanding and she makes it easy for use to take personal ownership of Storm’s own personal exploration.

Storm is a book packed with wisdom, passion, faith and compelling intrigue. This novel reads more like an allegory than a mere novel. It is clear that Joyce Anthony did not merely intend to entertain her readers. As I quickly got into this excellent read, I realized that the author’s real intent was to fill the reader with lessons from life that we unfortunately set aside, due to the entanglements and the tyranny of the urgent that so often besets us. I found that I was very able to put myself into the mind and body of Storm and to feel his wonder, speculation and his emotion through his incredible expedition into a mystery that even to Storm, himself could not easily comprehend.

This elusive and compassionate character shined through as a man who could not be satisfied with simple existence, in a life without significance. That which drove Storm to every endeavor he undertook in this novel could only be solved “within the whirling rainbow.” As I read this very interesting account of a man who craved answers, I thought about those in this world who were born, who lived nondescript lives and then who disappeared from the face of the Earth to only be forgotten, never be remembered as ever having been here. Storm searched for answers and in the process, he reached out and significantly touched the lives of those whom the heartless world so readily overlooks and discards.

Probably the scene that touched me the most was when Storm entered a broken down old shack and found the remains and the love letters of a woman whose love had been lost due to the death of her loved ones. He found old love letters and words that told of the sorrow of her life. This demonstrated to me that Storm understood that there is no life that is not fit to be lived and that every beating heart has significance and meaning. Through it all, Storm found his identity, and he came to realize that nobody is left untouched, that everyone has value and that life is not to be lived in a vacuum. That is a great lesson to be learned in our days, when human life has been cheapened and when men and women have forgotten that we are indeed our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. I recommend this book to everyone who seeks to find the broader and wider meanings to life. That should include everyone. I also recommend that Joyce Anthony get her next book ready, because I will be sure to read it.
