As I said, I don't know anything about Lulu so I can't comment on their program. With a printer like Lightning Source I have to provide print ready copy and art work, which means I had to have the cover and text designed independently. I got my ISBNs from Bowker, who is the basic source, so I know the ISBN is registered in my company's name (I bought a block of ten because I'm going to publish more books- cost $275). The text and cover design ran me about $900. The set-up with Lightning Source costs about $100. After than you pay LS the printing costs for each book you order which on a 300 page book would be $4.80. LS ships to wholesalers and such, and you set the discount rate off the retail price you establish. So, after the initial costs, for each book I sell, I make between about $4.00 and $14.00 profit depending upon whether the sale is wholesale or retail, Sounds like Lulu would be easier to set up then having an actual company such as mine. However, after the initial $1200 all the profits and the control is mine. I know exactily how many books I've sold and who purchased them. I feel more in control that way.
I just had a live chat with Lulu. Here is the transcript. I can publish as my own company - own the ISBN etc. but still pay them 99 bucks to distribute and sell. I have to pay for the ISBN also. That is about all of my costs for them to send the book out. Looks like a great route to take to me. How hard was it interfacing with Lightning Source directly?
Chris M: Yes, you can do so-I'd like to be able to print my own books and sell them on my internet site.
Chris M: Publish by Lulu is a distribution service that allows Lulu to be the publisher and at the same time we make your book available to online retailers like amazon and company.
scaramouche9999@yahoo.com: And I can also choose to publish as myself. What are the ramifications of making that choice?
Chris M: Publish by you will allow you to be the publisher of your book and you own the ISBN too.
Chris M: For publish by Lulu, you can't use the ISBN outside of Lulu, and that lulu will be the publisher of your book.
scaramouche9999@yahoo.com: If I own the ISBN as my own publisher, does Lulu still distribute to Amazon, Ingraham etc for me - as well as sell in your online store?
THanks for sharing the story of your publishing company. I'm seriously thinking about doing the same. I have about a week before my next book goes into LuLu for publication. I need to decide whether it goes in with my company logo or not. If there are any gotchas I need to know about, I'd love to hear about them!!

Good to hear from you. I hope your kids enyoyed being Navy brats as much as I enjoyed being an Army brat. I was a Marine and did some sea duty, so had some track with the Navy, but from your books it sounds like you might have been more than just a swabbie. Good luck in all of your writing.
